In March 2025, the Acrisure Amphitheater reached a significant construction milestone with the topping out of its structural steel canopy - a dramatic structure that stretches the length and width of a football field. The completion of this phase followed the placement of more than 2-million pounds of structural steel, marking a significant step toward realizing a world-class riverfront performing arts venue in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The canopy, which had to be assembled on-site due to its scale, features six steel columns—three on each side—which converge into two ground-level cast steel nodes that create an unobstructed view for spectators and help enhance the acoustic performance of the venue.

CAST CONNEX was engaged by the project fabricator to develop a creative solution to a highly visible and structurally demanding connection. We provided two 8-ton tri-column cast steel nodes to support the dynamically shaped canopy roof. These architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) components provide visual symmetry and structural performance. Mirroring one another at opposite ends of the amphitheater, the tri-column nodes allow the steel canopy to soar effortlessly above the seating bowl while meeting rigorous structural and architectural standards.
